Total alkalinity

Definition

An indicator describing the ability of water to neutralize acids, usually due to the presence of carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides, expressed as mg/L CaCO₃ equivalent

Importance and Essence

Shows the chemical stability and resistance to acidification of water
High alkalinity can affect the balance of ecosystems, and too little can lead to acidification of water

Where Used

In occupational health and safety assessments (drinking water quality)
In water control of industrial facilities (technological processes)
In environmental studies (assessment of the condition of water bodies)
