The Rules on the Management and Use of Wood-Fuel Ash, approved by Order No. D1-14 of the Minister of Environment dated 2011-01-05 ‘On the Approval of the Rules on the Management and Use of Wood-Fuel Ash’ (hereinafter, the Rules), have been amended. The Rules are recast and renamed the Requirements for the Management and Use of Solid-Biofuel Ash and Slag.

Key changes:

• The Rules previously regulated requirements only for wood-fuel ash. The recast Rules also bring solid-biofuel slag within their scope;
• An end-of-waste system has been introduced, and a description of the end-of-waste criteria for solid-biofuel ash and slag waste has been approved;
• The prepared plan no longer has to be coordinated with Aplinkos apsaugos agentūra (Environmental Protection Agency; AAA); it is sufficient to submit it to AAA;
• Tests may be carried out only by accredited laboratories using the specified methods;
• The assessment will cover not only the concentration of chemical substances, but also their release into the environment, that is, leaching;
• Clear restrictions specify when and where ash or slag may not be used;
• In forests, ash may be used only for compensatory fertilisation.
• The recast Rules enter into force on 2026-11-01.
