Determination of Total Organic Carbon

Definition

An indicator that describes the total amount of organic carbon in water, which is obtained by oxidizing organic compounds to carbon dioxide (CO₂) and measuring its concentration, expressed in mg/L

Importance and Essence

Shows the total amount of organic matter in water, regardless of their chemical composition
A high TOC value indicates organic pollution, which can affect water quality, promote the proliferation of microorganisms, disrupt disinfection processes and lead to the formation of by-products
This indicator is one of the main water quality parameters, used as a general indicator of organic pollution

Where Used

In occupational health and safety assessments (drinking water quality, sanitary risk)
In the control of industrial facilities (food industry, pharmaceutical production, technological processes where high-quality water is required)
In environmental studies (assessment of the condition of water bodies, wastewater analysis, organic pollution monitoring)
